Gamagori, located in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, is a coastal city known for its hot springs, scenic attractions, and vibrant local culture. In late 2023, Gamagori committed to advancing the circular economy to foster well-being in harmony with nature.

The city’s labour market plays a crucial role in achieving this vision. In collaboration with Harch Inc. and the city of Gamagori, Circle Economy mapped circular jobs in Gamagori, providing a foundation for creating more employment opportunities that will drive the circular transition forward.

1.7% of jobs in Gamagori are circular

611 jobs out of 35,918 jobs in Gamagori contribute to the circular economy, either directly or indirectly. About 1.1% of jobs are considered direct circular jobs, meaning they operate directly in the circular economy. Approximately 0.6% are indirect circular jobs, supporting direct circular sectors with materials and services.

To increase this percentage, Gamagori could invest in circular education and reskilling programmes and encourage circular activities like remanufacturing and repair in the city’s main sectors of manufacturing and healthcare. Furthermore, it can stimulate local, second-hand and repair markets to inspire changes in citizen’s consumption habits and work with business and finance to enable circular business models across all sectors of the economy.

Instead, this Explorer focuses on the share of circular jobs, calculated using Circle Economy and UNEP’s Circular Jobs Methodology.
